Lancaster and Morecambe Athletic Club Members Carole and David Wilkinson were on holiday in Shropshire and entered the Lilleshall Monumental Multi Terrain 10K Race.
On Saturday July the 9th I went up to Keswick to take part in the Borrowdale 21k Trail Run, part of a series of trail races that weekend, including a 5k along the shores of Derwentwater, and a marathon taking in Scafell Pike.
This was to be my first ever marathon at grand old age of 52 although I've run 3 half marathons. I did run marathon distance with Ben Smith (the 401 guy) a few weeks back around Morecambe but this doesn't really count as we had stops for cake and bacon butties! In the run up I hadn't run in 3 weeks because of a niggling calf injury so thought total rest would give me fresh legs for the day.
The day started with Ben visiting Heysham St. Peters Primary school for a morning assembly, about the 401 challenge, his reasons for doing it and the shear scale of the challenge in numbers such as the length of the day’s marathon being 786 times around their playground and the total mileage for the challenge being over 10,500 miles or Morecambe to Sydney.
Being a fan of this series of trail races the dirty double was something I’d always wanted to try – but due to other commitments I’ve never been able to fit both in. For those of you who don’t know it consists of a 15K trial race round Helvelyn on the Saturday and the Sunday it’s a 14K. Both race start from Glenridding – but the Sunday one – starts with cruise to the start on opposite side of the lake before basically you run round the southern end of the lake back to Glenridding.
August had loomed up pretty quickly on my race calendar, and it's fair to say the Prudent Riverside 10 had crept up on me.
