Mid Lancs Cross Country Report 05/03/2010

The sixth and final round of the Mid Lancs. Cross Country League was held on Saturday 5th March at Barrow. 28 Lancaster and Morecambe athletes, keen to ensure the best possible finishing positions in the league, took part. Final championship positions are based on the best four races out of the six events which have taken place through the season.

In the U11 Girls’ race Molly Newton-O’Brien rounded off her season in 8th place. She was joined by Allana Jones in 15th place and Shannon Perry who was placed 18th. Molly finished the season in 10th position and Allana in 15th. For all three girls this was their final race as U11 as they move up to U13 for the start of the track season next month.

Niall Graham’s 12th place in the U11 race earned him 7th place overall in the championship. He was well backed up by Nathan Slack in 15th position. Next home, despite battling with a cold, was Liam Hinnigan in 16th place whose overall position of 9th showed a huge improvement from last season. James McCracken, having finally reached his 8th birthday –and now older enough to train with the club- recorded 28th position and an impressive 15th overall in the league.

Once again Jessica McCracken was the club’s sole U13 girl running. 20th in Barrow ensured her 24th place overall – a fine first full season’s result. Equally impressive was U13 boy Joel Ingram whose 20th position was enough to secure 17th place overall.

The best result of the day came in the U15Girls’ race where Sarah Hodgson finished 2nd. Joined by Paige Clinton (13th); Hannah Fleet (15th) and Alice Tidswell (20th) the girls hoped that there first place in the team competition would be sufficient to win the bronze medal. Sadly, it wasn’t to be –they were piped to the podium by Pendle by one point.

James Whitaker ran in the U15 boys’ race finishing in 10th and in the U17 men’s race Edward fish finished 7th.

First back in the women’s race was Jayne Perry in 22nd place which earned her 13th place overall in the championships. She was joined by Kathy Winrow and Jennie Hodgson (17th Vet 45) to secure 11th team place. Overall the Senior Women finished the season in the silver medal position in Division 1 –an outstanding result.

Returning to form with every race and second in the Junior men’s event was Andrew Warren. In the Senior men’s race Jack Husband was 9th in the V50 category – resulting in an 8th place overall in the championship. He was joined by Chris Warren, Steve Perry and Mike Peat to place 11th in the Vet 40 teams and 4th in the Vet 50 teams. Steve finished the season in an overall 23rd Vets 50 position with Mike in 26th.

This weekend the athletes are in action in two separate venues. The Year 5and 6 Primary school runners will be representing their schools in Lancaster and Morecambe District Primary School Championships. The Inter Counties Championships will see Lancaster and Morecambe AC athletes Ryan Croasdale, Callum Mason, Paul and Sarah Hodgson,

Hannah and Adam Bateson and Annika Jarman representing Lancashire.
