Garstang 10K Race Report
The Garstang 10K was finally run on 31st January 2010 after the race was postponed from 10th January 2010 due to the bad weather. Over 320 runners participated in near perfect conditions on the undulating course through scenic countryside near Garstang and Catterall.
The men’s race was a closely fought affair. Steve Littler of Wesham Road Runners took first place in a time of 32.53 minutes with Lancaster and Morecambe’s Adam Hulme finishing narrowly behind with an excellent time of 33.05m. The women’s race was won by Sarah Ridgeway of Eryri in 38.15m with second place going to Gema Adams of Preston Harriers in 39.38m.
Lancaster and Morecambe AC were well represented in the veteran categories and placed in three age groups. Evelyn Elkington finished first in the Women’s Vet70 category in an excellent time of 1h 03.07m, Tom Robertshaw had an outstanding run to take second place in the Men’s Vet 60 category in 40.22m and Dorothy Butterfield took third place in the women’s Vet55 category with a solid run of 59.13m.
The first woman home from Lancaster and Morecambe AC was Jane Bass who finished strongly in 46.43m closely followed by Sadie McKeand who ran well in 47.48m. Third Lancaster and Morecambe woman finisher was Beccy Butterfield who ran 50.02 minutes to cross the line in 189th position.
Juniors Jack Modley (36.48mins) and Paul Hodgson (37.05mins) finished in 17th and 19th position respectively an encouraging result for the future. They were well supported by 15 year old James Whitaker (41.15mins) and 16 year old Luke Hodgson (44.04mins). Also running confidently was Alister Menzies who finished in a very respectable 53.18m and was running his first race since last May after recovering from an injury.
Other finishers from Lancaster and Morecambe AC: Paul Gardner 40.04m, T Jeffrey 41.16m, S Pinch 41.38m, A Whitton 41.39m, N Higham 42.39m, Simon Wilson 42.43m, G Hodgson 46.36m, D Wilkinson 47.21m, L Marney 47.29m, G Lambert 48.33m, D Butterfield 52.27m, B Cronin 52.55m, C Mossop 56.37m, L Clerk 1h.00.53m, Kathy Edge 1h.04.50m.
Meanwhile in Ulverston junior athletes Mary and Sarah Hodgson were racing in the Kendal Winter League Fell Race Series. In the U14 category Mary took the risky strategy of running through an icy area in order to secure the lead – but the resulting fall on the ice consigned her to second place behind Kendal’s Bella Gray. Helm Hill’s Melanie Hyder, as expected, won the U17 Girl’s race but Sarah should be pleased with a strong second place.
