Blackpool Cross Country Report 16/01/2010

A muddy course caused by melting snow on soft ground met the athletes who travelled to Lawsons Road, Blackpool for the fourth Mid Lancs Cross Country fixture.

Five boys toed the line for the U11 race first home being the on-form nine year old, Liam Hinnigan, in 17th place. Four seconds behind in 18th place was Nathan Slack. Oscar Coleman had a confident race to finish in 24th and he was well supported by Tobi Mustapha in 28th and Joseph Twigg who finished in 30th despite loosing his shoe.

First home in a strong U13 field was Mary Hodgson in 15th position. She was joined by Sarah Bell in 36th; newcomer Eve Sears in 40th and Jessica McCracken who finished in 41st place also having lost a shoe in the mud. Overall the team was placed 4th. In the U13 boys event Joel Ingram was 24th and Patrick McGuinness 27th.

In the U15 girls’ category Sarah Hodgson was placed 5th. Also competing was Christina Bell (17th); Paige Clinton (19th ) and Hannah Fleet(20th). The team achieved 3rd place. Under 15 boy James Whitaker was placed 20th in his race.

Callum Mason finishing 7th in the U17men’s race was closely followed by Adam Bateson in 8th. With Liam McGuinness in 15th and Eddie Fish in 21st place the team was 4th overall in a very competitive field.

Annika Jarman, having returned to form following a frustrating year of injuries, had an outstanding race, not only winning the junior women’s category but also being placed 1st overall in the senior women’s race. With Laura Morris (32nd) and Jayne Perry (35th) the Senior Women’s A team were placed 6th. Rebecca Butterfield (48th); Kathy Winrow (4th Vet45); and Jennie Hodgson (12th Vet 45) formed the B team which was in 15th position

Junior men Paul Hodgson, Jack Modley and Andrew Warren finished 3rd; 4th and 5th respectively in their age group. This team continued its unbroken series of wins in the Mid Lancs league this season. Student Angus Holford, in his first seaon as a senior, had an excellent race to finish 5th overall. With Mark Chippendale (3rd Vet40) Adam Hulme (34th); Paul, Jack and Jules Coleman (35th Vet 40) the team were placed 6th. Mark and Jules were joined by Chris Warren (22nd vets 50) and Steve Perry (23rd Vets 50) to form at Vets 40 team which was placed 11th. The Vets 50 team consisted of Chris and Steve together with Mike Peat (27th Vet 50) were 9th. Richard Shields was 39th in the Vets 50 category.

Following their day’s racing at Blackpool Sarah and Mary Hodgson were back in action the following day in Firbank competing in the first Kendal Winter League Fell Race of 2010. Mary was second girl in the U14 race and Sarah second girl in the U17 race.

The Lancaster and Morecambe Cross country squad will be back in action next Saturday at the North of England Cross Country Championships at Witton Park, Blackburn.
