Lancashire County Cross Country Report 09/01/2010
Blackburn Harriers, hosts of the 2010 Lancashire County Cross Country Championship, are to be congratulated for going ahead with this event on Saturday 9th January whilst all the surrounding counties chose to cancel their championships. For those athletes who made the journey to Witton Park they were rewarded with sunshine on a snowy, demanding course. A total of 24 Lancaster and Morecambe athletes took part.
First off were the U11 boys. Liam Hinnigan (22nd); Nathan Slack (25th); Albert Woodburn-Baker (26th); newcomer Daniel Palin (27th) and Tobi Mustapha (31st) went one better than last year to achieve 4th place overall.
In the Under 13 races Patrick McGuinness was placed 25th in the boys’ event and Mary Hodgson 19th in the girls’ race. Jessica McCracken should be pleased with her 28th place showing real improvement over the year.
Ryan Croasdale ran an excellent race to win the bronze medal in the U15 boys’ event. Harry Modley, returning from injury finished in 16th. In the girls’ event Sarah Hodgson finished in 7th and was backed up by Hannah Fleet in 27th.
The club’s first gold medal of the Championships was awarded to the U17 men. With only two points separating 1st and 3rd team this was a hard fought competition. Adam Bateson’s sound tactics were rewarded with 6th place. He was supported by Callum Mason (9th) Beau Smith (10th); Liam McGuinness (13th) and Luke Croasdale (15th).
The other team gold medal went to the junior ladies; Loughborough based Hannah Bateson, who won the individual silver; Annika Jarman, who worked her way through the field and was rewarded with the bronze medal and Elizabeth Wignall who achieved an excellent 6th place.
Kathy Winrow was the club’s sole competitor in the Senior Ladies race, but she should be please with her 5th place in the Vets 45 category.
Jack Modley was positioned 7th in the Junior men’s event. Finishing 6 seconds behind in 8th place was Paul Hodgson.
Although Mark Croasdale was the club’s only entrant in the senior men’s event he achieved an impressive second place in the vets event.
The athletes will be competing again this Saturday in round 4 of the Mid Lancs league in Blackpool.
