Athletics

Lancaster & Morecambe AC were well represented by teams at the North of England road relay championships in Leeds last weekend.

The runners had to complete two laps of a testing course, which included an off-road uphill drag, some tight corners and a lap of the athletics track in the middle of each stage.

The four stage women’s race was three miles each and leading the team off was Louise Gardner, who gave the team an excellent start finishing third in 16m.37, which was the fourth fastest stage of the day.

Next off was Chloe Rodham, who had just competed in the Great North run last weekend, running a good stage to finish sixth in 18m.27.

Chloe handed over to experienced relay runner Laura Morris who put in a strong run of 21m.02, passing over to Rebecca Butterfield in 20th place. Rebecca held onto that position running well in 21m.15.

Lancaster had two teams taking part in the men’s 6 stage race and going off on the tough first leg for the ‘A’ team was Adam Hulme, who battled hard for 39th position, in a fantastic time of 19m.11 for the 3.8 mile course.

Next off was Jordan Harris who held on well to finish in 41st place with a good time of 19m.54, handing over to Kieran Rowlands who put in a storming leg of 19m.38, overtaking seven runners to bring the team into 34th.

On fourth leg was Mark Gardner, who ploughed round the course with a solid time of 20m.17, holding onto 34th place and passing onto Jack Modley. Jack put in a strong run of 20m.24 to put the team in 38th place.

On glory leg was young gun Allan Gordon, running a good time of 20m.34 to bring the team back in a highly respectable 37th position.

The ‘B’ team also put in some good performances, with fell runner Sean Bolland leading the team off running 20m.31 for 62nd position.

On second was Matthew Burns, running well in 21m.28 and he handed over to Chris Breakell, who had a cracking run of 20m.24, overtaking three runners to bring the team to 60th.

Next off was Chris Warren, running a good leg of 23m.15 and he passed on to son Andrew, who suffered with a painful shoulder injury not long after setting off but ran a determined 25m.26. On final leg was David Brown, flying round in 21m.51, bringing the team back in 67th position.

The final race in the Lancaster Runners Centre 5k was a success with over 60 runners taking part.

Winner of the race was George Thompson from Border Harriers in 16m.09, followed by Iain Quinn from Cumberland AC in 16m.24. Lancaster & Morecambe AC’s Raymond Edgar had a strong comeback race, taking third place in 16m.58.

Lancaster had three other finishers in the top ten. There was a close battle for fifth place between Nick Gebhardt and Malc Smith, with Nick finishing just one second ahead in 17m.16 and in eighth place was Martin Armer in 17m.42.

First woman was Karen Heaviside from Eden Runners in 19m.03. Lancaster athletes took second and third prizes, with Jayne Perry running an excellent time of 20m.19 and Louise Goddard running well in 21m.24.
