Over the last few weeks Lancaster & Morecambe AC athletes have been taking on the classic distance of the mile.

The series looks to take in 5 different courses with one a dreaded Uphill mile. The Mile races will now take place once a month with interest being expressed from UCLAN and other local clubs looking to keep their athlete’s sharp in the winter.

The first mile took place on the 15th August and considering the wet weather was run at a superb pace. Course 1 is a very fast course with no serious uphill sections to contend with and Adam Hulme won in 4.18. Jordan Harris closely tracked Adam in 4.19 and third place was Mark Gardner in 4.21.

Full results: (course 1)

1st Adam Hulme L&M AC 4.18
2nd Jordan Harris L&M AC 4.19
3rd Mark Gardner L&M AC 4.21
4th Allan Gordon L&M AC 4.32
5th Chris Breakell L&M AC 4.49
6th Chris Thomas L&M AC 5.13

The second 1 Mile race took place only a week later and Course 2 begins with an uphill start so was destined to be slower than the first race but it was still run with considerable effort!

Joint first on this occasion was Mark Gardner and Jordan Harris with a well-fought battle over the middle stages with a good time of 4.29 being run.

Full results: (course 2)

1st Mark Gardner L&M AC 4.29
2nd Jordan Harris L&M AC 4.29
3rd Allan Gordon L&M AC 4.38
4th David Brown L&M AC 5.14

The third 1mile race was the dreaded Uphill Mile. Starting near Lancaster University, the race followed the twisting road towards Forest Hills Golf Course and finished at the Environmental Station at the brow of the Hill. With a small incline to begin the race set off at a good pace but the effects of the hill took its toll and it became about strength rather than just speed. Mark Gardner broke away at 900m to gain a 3 second lead and held it to the finish with Jordan Harris coming 2nd and Allan Gordon coming home strongly for 3rd.

Full results: (Uphill, Course 3)

1st Mark Gardner 5.28 L&M AC
2nd Jordan Harris 5.31 L&M AC
3rd Flesh Gordon 5.38 L&M AC
4th Matthew Burns 5.51 L&M AC
5th Joe Saavedra 6.01 UCLAN
6th David Brown 6.07 L&M AC
7th Chris Breakell 6.08 L&M AC
8th Al Brydon 6.31 UCLAN
