A pleasant, slightly cloudy morning greeted runners at the Lancaster & Morecambe Athletic Club’s annual Festive 4k Fun Run on the morning of Friday December 27th.  This was a special year, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the run.  Over 350 entrants turned up to run off excess Christmas pudding and turkey! – nearly as many as last year..

The Fun Run started on the athletics track at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre and made its way round the cycle circuit and then on the cycle track to Carlisle Bridge, before turning and returning back to the track where the runners were greeted with a happy smile and an attractive snowflake medal.

At the top end of the field, the run was won by Andrew Dorrian in a rapid time of 12mins 46 seconds, followed in 2nd place by young Oscar Stapleton of Ilkley Harriers, whose grandparents Linda and Dick and aunt Emily are active members of the Club, in 13:07.  Then in 3rd place was experienced racer V45 Jason Parker of Preston Harriers in 13:12.

In the Ladies’ race, 1st home in fifth place overall was Emily Japp of Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde AC in an excellent 13:17, with Carolyne Baxter a former LMAC runner now representing Guildford & Goldaming AC just behind in 7th place in 13:46.  Taking 3rd Ladies spot in 14.10 was V45 Carla Davies of Salford Harriers.

Host club Lancaster & Morecambe AC had around 50 enthusiastic junior and adult runners taking part, which is a great turnout.  There were also good numbers of Lancaster Runners. First male home for LMAC was young Joseph Twigg in an excellent 4th place in 13:15, with V55 Steven Worsley in 14:09 and then fast improving V60 David Walker in 13th place in 14:31.

First LMAC lady home in 44th place overall was V40 Sally Brassington in a very good 17:15, followed by young Madison Parrington in 19:07 and then V35 Katherine Lewis in 19:44.

Special thanks go to the marshals and volunteers at the event, and also to all the many sponsors of spot prizes – Asda; Barton Grange Garden Centre; Black’s fish ‘n chips (Halton); Booths (Lancaster); DC Wilson Garage;   Edge Cycleworks;  Lancaster Brewery;  Louise Goddard;  Prestons Butchers (Heysham); Robert Gordon James hairdresser;  Old Holly Farm (Cabus); OMM (3-1-5 gym); Salt Ayre Leisure Centre; Schools footwear; Rowan Wood Sports Therapy and Tesco.

Thank you also to DW Sport (Morecambe) for leading a much appreciated warm up session and to the Runners Centre (Lancaster) for sponsoring the runners’ numbers.

The next race event being organised by Lancaster & Morecambe AC is the 3 Bridges 10k at 11am on Sunday April 19th.  Entries are already being taken by Steve Perry at 10 Parkfield Drive, Lancaster LA1 4BU or email: This email address is being protected from spambots.
