LANCASTER & MORECAMBE AC

CROSS COUNTRY

There is a busy calendar of cross country events to brighten up the winter months! (See Cross Country Fixtures 2006 -2007)

Don't feel you have to be a star athlete to take part. It's an excellent opportunity for athletes of all ages and abilities to try their hand at this type of running. It also has good training benefits, building speed and strength. See “The Coaches View” for more information (860K download)

On really evil, cold, wet, muddy days, it builds mental strength too! (See "Eleven good reasons why you should run cross country" below.)

The club competes in the Mid Lancashire Cross Country League. This involves six meetings at various venues throughout Lancashire and Cumbria, one of which is usually held at Lancaster University and hosted by Lancaster & Morecambe AC. (Member clubs host these events on a rota basis - this season (2004–2005) is our turn for a rest). Races are held over distances of up to 6 miles (for seniors), with separate races for males and females and for each different age group. The age categories include under 11’s under 13, under 15, under 17, and seniors. Veterans run as part of the senior race.

Entry to Mid Lancs League meetings is free for club members - simply turn up on the day wearing your club vest. Look out for the club tent, this is where we now meet and is where you can obtain race numbers, race information as well as providing a place to change.

The club also runs its own cross country championship with the best 4 from 6 results from the Mid Lancs League counting in each category.

Club members compete in the Lancashire Cross Country Championships. The venue rotates each year, and they were hosted by Blackburn Harriers and AC at Witton Park in January 2005). There is a modest entry fee and entry forms can be obtained from the club.

Athletes who finish in the first six places in each race get automatic selection for the Lancashire County Team to compete in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships.

The club also competes in major events such as the Northern Cross Country Championships which are held at Consett, County Durham this year and the English Cross Country Relay Championships (Birmingham) This year coach trips to both these events have been organised by Mick Leck and Jim Stewart.

Lancaster & Morecambe AC is also involved with the organisation of cross country meetings for local schools. For more information about schools cross country contact Kathryn Burns on 01524 33833

Eleven reasons why you should run cross country
  • Races are cheap to enter
  • Usual sub-zero temperatures mean that you can run without even breaking into a sweat
  • It is a well known fact that mud is good for the complexion. For best results, let it dry like an all-over face pack, then either wash or scrape it off. Alternatively, leave on for a great sun-tanned look
  • Finishing a race is an excellent excuse for a hot toddy and a long, long beer
  • Cross country courses are never accurately measured distances. This means that you can convince yourself and your friends that you ran a really fast time, whatever you did
  • There is no need to clean your car all winter - it will only get dirty anyway (outside and in)
  • Races are normally on a Saturday afternoon which means you can avoid doing the shopping. Think of the money you will save
  • In cross country, its the team that counts. Emphasising this point can distract from your own terrible performance. Impress your friends and family by telling them how your club, Lancaster and Morecambe, came 10th, (even if you were 220th and didn't make the team)
  • It's a perfect opportunity to wear that really horrible jumper Great Aunt Ethel made you without looking silly
  • You can take the children and really wear them out
  • It feels great when it is over
